The story
Adnan Menderes led the Democrat Party to victory in 1950, the first change of government by free election in the Republic's history, and served as prime minister for ten years.
His government was removed by the military coup of 27 May 1960, and he was executed in 1961. He was later rehabilitated: his remains were moved to a mausoleum in İstanbul in 1990, and İzmir's airport carries his name.
