The story
Ağaçlıhöyük, also spelled Ağaçlıhüyük, is a neighbourhood of Milas about 11 km south of the town and 8 km from Milas–Bodrum Airport. Rauf's family farm, Menteşe Çiftliği, grows Memecik olives here, and the family's site describes the village as sitting on the flat plain just before the airport.
A höyük is a mound built up by old settlements, and the farm's site points to one on this plain. Vikipedi gives a local story for the name: the hill above the village was once covered in juniper and oak, with a tomb at its top. In the 1950s the gravel road from Milas to Bodrum ran below Baharlı to Ağaçlıhöyük and on to Koru. About a thousand people live here now, half the early-1980s figure, as young people have moved away for work.
