The story
Akyarlar lies 21 km from Bodrum and 8 km from Turgutreis, and only 5 km by sea from the Greek island of İstanköy, Kos. It was formed on 1 March 1946 when four hamlets, Mandıra, Aspat, Kemer and Kefaluka, joined as one village named Akyarlar. It is now a neighbourhood of Bodrum.
Close by is Akyarlar Yanardağı, a dormant volcano 172 metres high and part of the South Aegean volcanic arc. Windsurf schools use the bay for its shallow, clear water, protected from open-sea waves, and the regular summer meltem wind.
