The story
Ayvalık, on the Aegean coast of Balıkesir, is surrounded by olive groves and small islands; its old stone houses and churches recall the Greek town it was until the 1920s.
It is famous for olive oil, for the toasted sandwich known as Ayvalık tostu, and for Cunda island, joined to the town by a causeway and lined with seafood restaurants.
