The story
Bozburun sits on the coast of the peninsula that shares its name, south-west of Marmaris, looking across the sea towards Datça and the Greek island of Symi, Sömbeki in Turkish. Its name describes the place: grey (boz) hills and a natural cape (burun). It became a town in 1991 and has been a neighbourhood of Marmaris since the 2012 reorganisation.
The village is known for building gulets, the wooden yachts used on blue voyage cruises. A 2013 survey found 11 of the 19 boatyards in the Marmaris area here, and boats from Datça are hauled out for the winter at yards in Bozburun, Selimiye and Söğüt.
Tourism, fishing, sponge diving and beekeeping keep the village going, and its thyme honey is known across Türkiye. The small harbour is a regular stop on the blue voyage route.
