The story
Eski Datça, “Old Datça”, is a neighbourhood of the Datça district, about 2.5 km inland from the harbour. It is the only settlement on the peninsula that has been lived in since ancient times, and its history reaches back to the 11th century BC.
Its lanes are paved with cobblestones and lined with houses built of local stone, with bougainvillea and oleander over the walls. Next door is Reşadiye, which was the first centre of the district when Datça became one in 1928; the centre moved down to İskele, by the sea, in 1947.
The poet Can Yücel settled in Eski Datça in his last years. He died in 1999 and was buried in Datça, and a sign for Can Yücel Sokağı still marks the lane to his old house.
