The story
Euromos is an ancient Carian city about 12 km north-west of Milas and about 4 km south-east of Selimiye, a neighbourhood of Milas. This is not the fishing village of Selimiye near Marmaris. The city lay at the foot of the mountains that run beside Latmos, on the road between Milas and Lake Bafa.
Its best-known building is the temple of Zeus Lepsynos, from the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. Sixteen of its columns still stand with their beams, and most carry inscriptions honouring the citizens who paid for them. A few columns were never fluted, a sign the temple was never finished. Pottery shows the site was sacred by the 6th century BC.
The agora, about 95 by 83 metres, can be seen from the Milas to Selimiye road, and a Hellenistic theatre on the western slope held around 2,000 people. In July 2021, excavations at the temple found two marble statues about 2,500 years old.
