The story
The Balık Pazarı, or Balık Hali, is in the arasta in the centre of Fethiye, a market arcade that dates to the 1960s. Inside it is the Balık Taşı, the fish stone, where fishermen sell their own catch. In the 2000s fish sellers gradually replaced the butchers' shops, and a 'buy your fish from me, cooking is free' offer started the market's way of eating.
Today you pay for your fish at the stall in the middle and name the restaurant you are sitting at. The fish is cleaned at the stall, taken over and cooked for your table. The restaurants charge a small cooking fee and earn their living from the meze, salad and drinks.
About ten fish restaurants work in the market. Fethiye's chamber of commerce lists a dinner at the Balık Pazarı among the things not to miss in the town.
