The story
Its monumental structures belong to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period. UNESCO inscribed Göbekli Tepe on the World Heritage List in 2018.
The site sits on a hill near Şanlıurfa in southeastern Türkiye. Its carved limestone pillars, some showing foxes, boars and birds, are thousands of years older than Stonehenge or the Egyptian pyramids, which changed how archaeologists think about the first settled communities.
