The story
Gümüşlük is a seaside village and fishing port on the western tip of the Bodrum peninsula, now a neighbourhood of Bodrum. It stands on the site of Myndos, an ancient Carian port with strong walls and a good harbour. Alexander the Great tried to take it by surprise in 334 BC and was driven back.
The foundations of old buildings can still be seen in knee-deep water leading out to Tavşan Adası, Rabbit Island, and the hills around the bay are protected from new building. Fish restaurants line the beach, and a market is held every Wednesday.
Since 2004 the village has hosted the Gümüşlük International Classical Music Festival. Its concerts are held in the ancient stone quarries of Koyunbaba, where Mausolos is said to have cut stone for his tomb at Halikarnassos.
