The story
Gündoğan lies on the north coast of the Bodrum peninsula, about 25 km from Bodrum, between Yalıkavak and Göltürkbükü. Its historic name was Farilya, said to mean 'the place where the sun rises', and the name Gündoğan came into use after 1961. Traces of settlement go back to the 4th century BC.
Visitors come for rock tombs, churches and old windmills, and in summer for windsurfing in the bay. A 15-minute boat ride away is Küçük Tavşan Adası, also called St. Apostol, where the Apostol church is being conserved in an Italian–Turkish project.
Nearby Peynir Çiçeği Mağarası, the 'cheese flower cave', has given finds from the Copper and Bronze Ages. Its name is said to come from people using the dripping water as rennet.
