The story
Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı was born in Crete in 1890 and studied history at Oxford. In 1925 a story he wrote led to his exile to Bodrum. He came to love the town, took the pen name Halikarnas Balıkçısı, "the Fisherman of Halicarnassus", after its ancient name, and lived there for about 25 years.
His stories and novels, among them Aganta Burina Burinata (1945) and Uluç Reis (1962), are full of fishermen, sponge divers, boats and the Aegean. With friends he began the boat trips that became the Blue Voyage. He died in İzmir on 13 October 1973 and, at his wish, was buried in Bodrum.
