The story
The Mausoleum was a monumental tomb built in the 4th century BC at Halicarnassus, today's Bodrum, for Mausolus, the ruler of Caria. After his death his wife and sister Artemisia carried the work on. Its columns recalled Greek temples and its stepped, pyramid-shaped roof was crowned by a four-horse chariot.
It was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and every later tomb of its kind is called a mausoleum after it. Earthquakes brought it down, and the Knights of St John took its stones to build Bodrum Castle. Today the site is an open-air museum.
