The story
After a siege of nearly two months, the Ottoman army under the 21-year-old Sultan Mehmed II entered Constantinople on 29 May 1453, ending the Byzantine Empire. The sultan was afterwards called Fatih, "the Conqueror".
The city became the Ottoman capital and, over centuries, İstanbul. The anniversary is marked each year, and the Fatih district and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge carry his name.
