The story
The Kangal is a large, powerful livestock guardian dog from the Kangal district of Sivas. It has a short tan coat, a black mask and a calm temperament, and it has protected sheep from wolves for centuries.
It is considered a national breed, with breeding centres in Sivas, and its image appears on a Turkish postage stamp.
