The story
Karia Yolu, the Carian Trail, is a long-distance footpath named after the ancient Carians. It links the coast to the mountains by old stone caravan roads, mule paths and forest tracks, past pine slopes, olive terraces, almond groves and ancient ruins, through the provinces of Muğla and Aydın.
The route grew from expeditions that Yunus Özdemir, Altay Özcan, Volkan Demir and Dean Livesley began in 2009 and continued over four winters. The Muğla Chamber of Commerce and Industry led the project, the South Aegean Development Agency helped fund it from 2012, and it opened officially in February 2013.
It is divided into 46 stages in sections covering the Bozburun and Datça peninsulas, the Gulf of Gökova, inland Caria and the country around Muğla, and it is waymarked with red and white stripes. Its official site puts the length at about 850 km, making it Türkiye's longest walking route.
