The story
Kaunos was a port city of ancient Caria, on the border with Lycia, beside the river now called the Dalyan Çayı. The Dalyan delta has since pushed the sea away, so the ruins of its theatre, baths, agora and walls now stand some way inland.
Its best-known sight is a row of tombs cut into the cliff face in the 4th century BC, their fronts carved like small temples with columns and a pediment. They are easiest to see from Dalyan, and visitors reach the city itself by boat across the river.
