The story
The opening of the Assembly is distinct from the later choice of Ankara as capital and the proclamation of the Republic. These events mark different steps in the country’s institutional history.
The date is now a public holiday dedicated to national sovereignty and to children. Every 23 April, children symbolically take the seats of the Assembly and of officials across the country.
