The story
Muğla saraylısı is made from thin sheets of yufka rolled up with local walnuts, coiled into a spiral in a round tray, brushed with olive oil and baked. Warm syrup of sugar, water and lemon salt is poured over it, and it rests for hours before serving.
The dessert goes back about 300 years to the Yörük, who made it for festivals and engagements. A gold coin, a sarı lira, was placed on it at engagements, and in the local dialect the name drifted from sarı lira to sareyli and then to saraylı.
It is a registered geographical indication (mahreç işareti), number 346, registered on 17 April 2018 at the request of the Muğla Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
