The story
As the Republic’s first president, he held a central role in its early political history. He was followed in the presidency by İsmet İnönü.
He led the national movement after the First World War, founded the Republic in 1923 and carried through sweeping reforms, including the new Latin alphabet in 1928. The surname Atatürk, "Father of the Turks", was given to him by the Assembly in 1934.
