The story
Nevruz marks the spring equinox and the new year of the old Persian and Turkic calendars. People light bonfires and jump over them for luck, paint eggs, picnic outdoors and wear the colours of spring.
The festival is shared by many peoples from the Balkans to Central Asia, and UNESCO lists it as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In Türkiye it is celebrated with particular energy in the east and southeast.
