The story
On 19 May 1919 Mustafa Kemal stepped ashore at Samsun on the Black Sea, the moment tradition takes as the start of the War of Independence. Atatürk later dedicated the day to the country's young people.
It is now a public holiday, Atatürk'ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı, marked with stadium displays, relay runs and ceremonies in every town.
