The story
Osman Hamdi Bey trained as a painter in Paris and returned to lead Ottoman archaeology and art. He founded the İstanbul Archaeology Museums and the Academy of Fine Arts, and excavated the royal tombs at Sidon.
His painting The Tortoise Trainer, Kaplumbağa Terbiyecisi, of 1906 is among the best known Turkish paintings and hangs in the Pera Museum in İstanbul.
