The story
Sabahattin Ali wrote short stories, novels and poems about ordinary lives, often with a sharp social edge. Kürk Mantolu Madonna, published in 1943, tells of a young Turkish man's love for a painter in Berlin.
Largely forgotten for decades, the novel became a bestseller among young readers in the 2010s. His song lyric Aldırma Gönül is still sung across the country.
