The story
Safranbolu kept its Ottoman houses, whitewashed with dark timber frames and overhanging upper floors, when other towns lost theirs. Hundreds still stand around the old market and the caravanserai.
The town takes its name from the saffron once grown in its fields, and its lokum, Turkish delight, is famous. UNESCO inscribed the City of Safranbolu in 1994.
