The story
Sedir Adası is the largest of a group of three islands in the Gökova gulf. In antiquity it was the site of Kedrai, a Carian town, and its walls and towers, a well-preserved theatre, an agora and a temple of Apollo later replaced by a church still stand among olive and pine trees.
The beach on the northern shore is made of small, rounded grains of limestone, a natural formation rather than ordinary sand. A legend says the sand was brought from Egypt for Cleopatra, which gives the island and the beach their popular name. The sand is protected, and none may be taken away.
Boats to the island leave from Akyaka and from Çamlı village near Marmaris.
