The story
Söğüt, officially Söğütköy, is a neighbourhood of Marmaris near the southern end of the Bozburun peninsula. It was a village until the 2012 reorganisation of local government. From its shore the Greek island of Symi is clearly visible across the water.
In an Ottoman census of 1831, Söğüt was one of the villages of the area, then called Tarahya, that were given a headman (muhtar) for the first time. About 1 km south-west of the village are the wall remains of the ancient town of Thyssanos, which has not been excavated.
Stone houses, quiet streets and fish restaurants by the shore set the pace, and Söğüt bay is used as a yacht anchorage.
