The story
Stratonikeia stands beside the village of Eskihisar, a few kilometres west of Yatağan. It was founded in the 3rd century BC and named after Queen Stratonike. Its remains include a city gate, a theatre, a gymnasium and a council house whose wall carries Diocletian's price edict in Latin.
Life went on here long after the Romans: a Seljuk bath and the Ottoman Şaban Ağa Mosque stand among the ancient ruins. The ancient city is on Türkiye's World Heritage tentative list, which means it has been put forward for UNESCO but is not inscribed.
