The story
Turgutreis lies at the western end of the Bodrum peninsula, 18 km from Bodrum town. It was once the village of Karatoprak and was renamed in 1972 after Turgut Reis, the Ottoman admiral said to have been born here in 1485. A memorial to him stands in Şevket Sabancı Park.
Until the late 1960s poor roads kept it cut off, but tourism changed it quickly. Today it is the second largest town on the peninsula, with about 5 km of sandy beaches, a marina with ferries to the Greek island of Kos, and sunsets that people gather to watch.
